JUVENILE REVIEW BOARD
SERVING THE YOUTH OF:
What is the Juvenile Review Boards:
The JRB represents an effort to divert juvenile offenders from the formal justice system. Generally, JRBs are community-based, tailored to the communities they serve, and reflective of the population that resides in that community. The JRB incorporates a Balanced and Restorative Justice approach, which balances the needs of the offender, the victim, and the community. The JRB provides juvenile offenders, who admit their guilt, an opportunity to avoid going to Juvenile Court by being part of a process where they face the victim harmed, their parent(s)/guardian, a group of volunteer community members, and law enforcement officials.
Through a mediated process, the JRB focuses on assisting the juvenile offender to: a) understand how their behavior harmed the victim and the community; 2) acknowledge that their behavior was directly harmful to others; and 3) take responsibility to repair the harm, through either direct or indirect action on the part of the offender. Additionally, the JRB provides support and assistance to youths to develop the competencies that will enable them to effect necessary changes in their behavior to avoid re-offending in the future.
JRB Advisory Board:
An Advisory Board, comprised of leaders representing Griswold's various sectors (civic, municipal, education, social service, faith-based, and business) will be convened minimally on a quarterly basis to guide and oversee the operations of the JRB.
The role of the Advisory board will be to: develop and approve the criteria for the selection of the JRB Panel Membership; review JRB program policies and procedures; identify additional resources in specific neighborhoods helpful to youth appearing before the JRB; and advocate for increased resources to enable the expansion of JRB to serve more youth.
