Jewett City Baptist Church

When it was originally built in 1840, the Jewett City Baptist Church was smaller than it is now. The building was enlarged later on, although its original belfry was destroyed in a 1938 hurricane. In recent history, the church was the site of minor controversy back in 2006 when a passerby complained about the religious music that played from the new belfry. The story was covered by local news organizations, The New York Times, and even The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. Behind the church is a large cemetery that was opened in the early 1800s and was (as it still is today) privately owned.
