Jewett City Cemetery

This cemetery is the current home of the infamous Ray family, who died between 1840 and 1850 of tuberculosis. The condition’s symptoms were confused at the time with vampirism. This is the origin of the borough’s long-time legend of vampires. In addition to the Rays, Civil-War veteran William Henry Tift is buried here. He was the first Jewett City resident to volunteer to fight in the war and later served as Borough Clerk and Treasurer. He is the namesake of Tift Street.
